About Us

Saturday November 10th 1979, a Canadian Pacific freight train carrying both explosive and poisonous chemicals derails in Mississauga. The largest peace time evacuation of its time is underway. A group of like-minded volunteers began helping emergency services in the evacuation of residents, Respond Emergency Communications Search and Rescue was born.

The team was comprised of different people with different skills but with one goal in mind, the safety of their community. Using the tools of their time the founders of Respond used CB's monitoring Channel 9, assisting as they could as well as notifying emergency services. Covering a territory of approximately 1,200 square kilometres (750 square miles) on land and 100 kilometres (65 miles) of shoreline in Oakville, Brampton, Mississauga and Etobicoke, assisting with everything from breakdowns to missing persons.

In 2008 Respond underwent some changes and reformed under the name of Respond Search and Rescue. Respond or RSAR for short operates within the GTA assisting at community events with event medical, public safety, and communications. Events are the lifeblood of our organization, Respond assists with numerous community events in the Village of Streetsville, City of Mississauga and City of Burlington. Our current event roster includes many annual community events with requests for services throughout the year. Our volunteers have a 100% coverage rating for events requested vs. events covered, which is a true showing of our dedication and pride.
